BRIDGETON, N.J. — A woman is facing charges after she climbed over safety barriers at the Cohanzick Zoo and attempted to pet a tiger, narrowly avoiding serious injury. Authorities say 24-year-old Zyair J. Dennis of Millville ignored posted restrictions on Aug. 18, 2024, reaching through a metal fence before pulling back just as the tiger snapped its jaws.
Officials later learned Dennis had also trespassed near the zoo’s bear enclosure earlier that same day. Concerned visitors captured the incident on video, prompting an investigation by Bridgeton’s Recreation Department and local police. Dennis has been charged with defiant trespassing and violating city ordinances, with a court appearance scheduled for April 2025.
The zoo emphasized that safety barriers are in place to protect both visitors and animals, warning that such reckless behavior endangers everyone involved.
