Wildwood, NJ — As the busy tourism season approaches, Wildwood officials are taking steps to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere on the Boardwalk. The city will enforce a 10 p.m. curfew for minors, with potential arrests for both minors and their parents if the curfew is violated. This crackdown follows a chaotic Memorial Day weekend in 2024, when over 40 arrests were made, and police received an overwhelming number of service calls. The situation led to the declaration of a state of emergency, and the Boardwalk was closed early due to concerns about civil unrest. Police Chief Joseph Murphy emphasized the city’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for families, stating, "We want everyone to have a great time in Wildwood, but safety comes first." In addition to the curfew, the city is enhancing security with the installation of protective bollards on the Boardwalk, increased surveillance, and a higher police presence. These efforts complement existing ordinances that ban large bags after 8 p.m. and alcohol on the beach and Boardwalk. Mayor Ernie Troiano warned that violations of these rules would have serious consequences, saying, "This isn’t a suggestion — it’s the law." Last year’s incidents, which involved large numbers of teens and young adults, led to police needing additional support from neighboring agencies in Cape May County. While no one died during the Memorial Day events, Chief Murphy noted that the situation was reminiscent of the tragic H2oi rally in 2022.
