Two Young Sisters Die in Millville Blaze, Over 20 Displaced

Millville, NJ – A devastating fire tore through the 300 block of S. 4th Street in Millville late Wednesday night, claiming the lives of two young sisters, 9-year-old Valery and 13-year-old Sammy. A family member confirmed their deaths, stating the girls were trapped in the fire while their parents and other siblings managed to escape. The fire, which started around 11 p.m., destroyed six homes across four buildings. Two duplexes were burned to the ground, while two single-family homes were severely damaged.
The fire was fueled by a ruptured gas line, which intensified the flames, allowing them to spread rapidly from one home to another. Firefighters faced additional challenges as a fire hydrant on the block malfunctioned, requiring them to run hoses over 800 feet to reach a functioning hydrant. More than 20 people have been displaced by the blaze, with community members offering donations and support for those affected.
Christy Funeral Home in Millville has become a drop-off point for goods and clothing. The Red Cross is also assisting displaced residents. An adult family member was injured in the fire but is expected to recover. The bodies of the two sisters were discovered in the basement of one of the affected homes. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, there are no signs of foul play.
