Millville, NJ – A fire that broke out Thursday night has left two children missing and destroyed six homes in the area. Firefighters and rescue teams are still searching for the children after the blaze, which began around 11 p.m. on 4th Street. At least 23 people have been displaced, and one individual was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. According to Millville Fire Chief John Wettstein, the fire spread rapidly after a faulty fire hydrant and a ruptured gas line contributed to its intensity.
The collapse of two floors inside one home caused the gas line to break, feeding the fire. Due to issues with nearby hydrants, firefighters had to lay 1,000 feet of hose, using about 1,300 gallons of water from fire trucks and a tower before resources ran out. Red Cross New Jersey is assisting affected residents with housing, food, and clothing. The fire was so intense that the front of a fire truck melted. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
