Sea Isle City Reinforces Curfew and Backpack Ban to Tackle Rowdy Teen Behavior

SEA ISLE CITY—In an effort to curb unruly behavior from teenagers and ensure a smooth summer tourism season, Sea Isle City will enforce its curfew and backpack ban starting Memorial Day weekend. The city is ramping up its efforts with about 40 full-time and seasonal police officers ready to patrol popular spots like the oceanfront Promenade.
Mayor Leonard Desiderio emphasized that the police will be fully staffed during the Memorial Day weekend, focusing on preventing disruptive activities often caused by teens, such as public drinking, theft, and fighting. He also stated that parents will be held accountable for their children's actions. In 2023, Sea Isle City introduced a 10 p.m. curfew for juveniles under 18, restricting them from being out in public during overnight hours unless accompanied by an adult or engaged in certain activities. Along with the curfew, a backpack ban was imposed on the Promenade and beaches after 10 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
The ban aims to prevent illegal items like alcohol, drugs, or weapons from being carried in public. Police will issue warnings for first-time violations and may take further action if necessary. Surveillance cameras in high-traffic areas across town will help monitor activities, and officers will have the capability to respond to issues quickly. As the city prepares for a busy summer, officials remain hopeful that these measures will reduce juvenile crime and keep the town safe for both residents and visitors.
