VILLAS, N.J. — Lower Township will be adding six new pickleball courts near the municipal complex on Bayshore Road as the sport continues to gain popularity throughout the community. The project, which will be situated between the government complex and the senior center, carries a total estimated cost of just over $456,000. Township officials recently approved $60,000 to move forward with design and administrative tasks, clearing the way for construction. Of the approved funds, $40,000 will cover engineering expenses such as site surveying, design plans, and public bidding. An additional $20,000 is allocated for construction oversight, including contract administration and part-time field observation. This development comes on the heels of a recently completed court project in Diamond Beach, underscoring the township’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for recreational pickleball facilities. According to Township Manager Mike Laffey, interest in the sport has surged, prompting further investment in infrastructure to accommodate residents. Recreation Superintendent Mitch Plenn has been assigned to oversee the project as it moves forward. The township has enlisted engineer Marc DeBlasio to handle design and construction administration. Officials have not yet announced a start date for the construction phase, but with design funds in place, work is expected to begin in the near future.
