HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – A 42-year-old Egg Harbor Township man, Herbert L. Myers, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making threats against local schools, according to police. Myers faces charges of false public alarms and terrorist threats and is currently being held in the Atlantic County Jail. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues. The threat was made to schools in Mays Landing, prompting nearby schools to increase security measures.
Police, along with the Atlantic County Sheriff's Office, deployed officers around the affected schools during the investigation. The K-8 township school district confirmed the threat was no longer active by 3:10 p.m. that day. Oakcrest High School canceled all afterschool activities, including athletic games and practices, as a precaution.
Myers was located aboard a NJ Transit bus in Vineland. When detectives attempted to contact him, Myers brandished a knife. The bus was safely evacuated, and the area around Landis Avenue and Main Road was shut down while local police, with assistance from various law enforcement agencies, negotiated Myers' surrender. Multiple agencies, including the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office, Egg Harbor Township Police, and NJ Transit, were involved in the response to the incident.
