Cape May, NJ. – The City of Cape May has adopted a new ordinance requiring trucks carrying construction debris through the city to secure their loads with proper coverings. Approved by the City Council on April 1, the ordinance mandates that vehicles be equipped with six-point secure coverings that meet specific standards. The responsibility for ensuring the loads are properly secured falls on the owner of the dumpster, the contractor, and all involved employees or agents. Penalties for violating the ordinance include the potential revocation of permits for placing dumpsters on city streets, as well as the denial of future permits. The ordinance, which was debated and refined over several weeks, specifies that the covering must be secured at four end points and at the midpoint of both sides of the dumpster. This measure is part of the city’s efforts to reduce the amount of construction and demolition debris that often spills onto roadways, wetlands, and waterways. The ordinance will take effect 20 days after its adoption and publication.
