CAPE MAY, NJ — Cape May City Council has proposed new restrictions on curbside recycling as part of an updated ordinance that could take effect before the start of the 2025 summer season. The goal of the changes is to improve the balance between the city’s trash pickup obligations and the responsibility of businesses for recycling disposal. Under the new rules, single- and dual-family homes will be limited to a total of 192 gallons of recyclables, and individual containers must not exceed 96 gallons. Additionally, cardboard must be securely bundled, tied, or contained for pickup, and all containers, including trash and recyclables, must have lids when placed curbside. The city will also no longer collect trash or recyclables from any property with more than six containers.
Any excess recyclable material beyond the new limits will be the responsibility of the property owner to dispose of through a private hauler. The ordinance was introduced following months of discussion and revisions, aiming to streamline waste management and ensure efficient service. A public hearing is scheduled before the final vote on April 15th. Cape May officials hope to have the ordinance in place ahead of the busy summer season, which kicks off in late May.
