CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. – Eleven candidates, six Democrats and five Republicans, have filed petitions to run in New Jersey’s gubernatorial primaries set for June 10. The Democratic field includes former Senate President Steve Sweeney, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, while the Republican candidates are led by former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, state Sen. Jon Bramnick, and former talk show host Bill Spadea.
In Cape May County, five candidates are running for two Assembly seats, with Democrats outnumbering the two Republican incumbents for the first time in recent memory. The race for county positions and in seven municipalities with local primaries has no contested races, except for a two-person contest for the Republican mayoral nomination in North Wildwood.
In the 1st Legislative District, which includes Cape May County, Republican incumbents Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan are running unopposed, filing a joint petition as CapeGOP-endorsed candidates. On the Democratic side, three candidates—Carolyn Rush, Brandon Safford, and West Cape May Mayor Carol Sabo—are competing for two nominations.
For county offices, Republicans Andrew Bulakowski and Robert “Bobby” Barr are seeking reelection to the Cape May County Board of Commissioners, and County Clerk Rita Rothberg is also running unopposed for another term. In local races, the contest for mayor in North Wildwood is between council President Salvatore Zampirri and Edward Heuser, with Zampirri receiving the CapeGOP endorsement. Other local elections across the county feature uncontested Republican candidates.
