CAPE MAY CITY – Dennis Crowley recently concluded his five-year term as chair of the Municipal Taxation and Revenue Advisory Committee in Cape May. Crowley’s background in government policy and education allowed him to bring a wealth of experience to the committee, where he guided the group in making several key recommendations for the city’s fiscal health. One of the committee's most significant accomplishments during Crowley’s tenure was its recommendation to increase the municipal occupancy tax. This tax was raised to the state-allowed limit of 3% in 2021, contributing to the city’s revenue, which is expected to exceed $3 million in the 2025 budget.
This increase has helped keep the local purpose tax rate stable for the past six years. Beyond the occupancy tax, the committee provided suggestions on a wide range of topics, from utility cost recovery and stipend policies to regulations on mercantile licenses and short-term rental fees. Although not every recommendation was accepted, many of them were incorporated into city policy and have continued to impact the city's operations. Crowley’s leadership on the committee has left a lasting impact, with his work helping to shape fiscal policy in Cape May. As he steps down from his role, the city will continue to benefit from the foundation he helped build during his tenure.
