AVALON, N.J. — The borough's beach replenishment project has been delayed until the summer due to ongoing road and bridge work affecting equipment transport. Avalon routinely conducts back-passing projects in years without federal hydraulic replenishment, moving sand from a borrow area at 34th Street to eroded northern beaches. This year, however, weight limits on the Stone Harbor 96th Street bridge and ongoing work along Avalon Boulevard have prevented the necessary heavy equipment from reaching the island. The borough must wait until the county finishes repairs on Avalon Boulevard, the only viable route for transporting the machinery. As a result, the project's original completion date of May 9 has been pushed to July 7. Borough Engineer Thomas Thornton outlined the delay during a March 26 council work session.
