ATLANTIC COUNTY, NJ -- The Atlantic County Sheriff's Office is alerting drivers across New Jersey about a widespread scam targeting E-ZPass users. With over 35 million active E-ZPass accounts and nearly 60 million tags in use, this scam is a growing concern, especially for those traveling on major roads like the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. The scam involves fraudulent text messages that appear to be from E-ZPass but are designed to steal personal information. The messages often contain links that, if clicked, can compromise personal and banking details. The sheriff’s office urges anyone who receives such a message to ignore it and avoid clicking on any links. If you believe you’ve been a victim of the scam, it’s crucial to act quickly. Contact your bank or credit card company and E-ZPass immediately. Additionally, monitor your financial accounts closely and ensure that your phone has not been compromised. To protect yourself, always visit the official E-ZPass website directly by typing the URL into your browser rather than clicking on suspicious links. This scam has garnered significant attention, with the FBI receiving thousands of complaints nationwide. If you suspect you've been targeted, you can report it through the FBI’s website.
